LECTURES:
Exercise 1:

In this task, we were instructed to do a detailed dissection of the letters "H", "o", "b" and "g" by using Adobe Illustrator.

Before drawing the sketch, I first studied the homework of my former upperclassmen and consulted a lot of information related to fonts on the Internet. Constantly looking for inspiration, read a variety of fonts, a variety of styles, which let my mind have a certain idea, which is conducive to my future work.

ITC New Baskerville:

Fig 2.1, Letter Deconstruction, (17/6/2024)

The letter H basically has a symmetrical shape no matter what font it's in, right.

Fig 2.2, Letter Deconstruction, (17/6/2024)

The letter o basically presents a symmetrical shape no matter what font it is in, and it has the same symmetrical appearance as h.

Fig 2.3, Letter Deconstruction, (17/6/2024)

The letter g has a relatively big difference between uppercase and lowercase, both uppercase and lowercase are very complex, the upper is wider, the middle is thinner and the bottom is larger, there is a little top-heavy feeling.

Fig 2.4, Letter Deconstruction, (17/6/2024)

b is a simpler word, consisting of a semicircle and a straight line, with little difference between upper and lower case.

Gill Sans:
Fig 2.5, Letter Deconstruction, (17/6/2024)

Compared with the previous h letter, Gill sans' H is more regular and feels that this H is more suitable for some solemn and sacred occasions.

Fig 2.6, Letter Deconstruction, (17/6/2024)

The O is a symmetrical letter symmetric figure from every point of view.

Fig 2.7, Letter Deconstruction, (17/6/2024)

The letter g has a relatively big difference between uppercase and lowercase, both uppercase and lowercase are very complex, the upper is wider, the middle is thinner and the bottom is larger, there is a little top-heavy feeling.

Fig 2.8, Letter Deconstruction, (17/6/2024)

Compared with the previous B, Gill sans B is also simpler, which is a standard simple ordinary letter b without too much modification, simple and clear at a glance.

Exercise 2:

In this exercise, we were instructed to sketch the following letters ODHNG / odhng using the 3 pens.
We need to explore different writing styles for each of the 3 pens.

Three pen used:
Artline Calligraphy Pen
Thin Brush Sign Pen
Thick Brush Sign Pen

DIGITISATION

This week, I will talk about making handwriting into electronic version, which is no longer a problem for me. I have absolute confidence to design it well. I have learned from the experience given by the teacher, and I will control the gap between fonts well.

Fig 3.7 Digitisation Process project 3 sketch

Among the three fonts, I prefer Plan 1 and Plan 2. The font of Plan 3 is somewhat sloppy and not used in formal occasions, while the first two are more formal, like the letter O, I added the elements of ancient coins to make it richer. The first design I designed was more to break the original shape and make the letters irregular.

Fig 3.9 Improved font

I improved the font of the first edition by taking the font apart more and leaving enough space for the font. Only with enough space can the font be more comfortable, and if it is too compact or too large, it is not suitable. Moreover, the font, spacing and thickness of the first edition were not quite consistent, which was improved in the second edition.

Fig 3.13 structure

After I used the method taught by Mr.Max, my font became more structured, I knew that I only needed to make a few prescribed letters, but I preferred to make the full 26 letters, so that my picture was more complete and I could practice my technique more.

With the help of auxiliary lines, my fonts become more beautiful. Auxiliary lines can not only improve the accuracy of my fonts, but also parse the structure of fonts in place.

Today I talked with Mr.Max about how to improve my homework. The size of my letters is too large and should be reduced. Make the letters and punctuation uniform, and then make the letter thickness uniform, so that the font will look regular.

The first time I used the software font lab, my feeling was very interesting. For me, the software was not very difficult, and I quickly got used to it. After watching the video of Mr.Vinod, I completed this week's homework according to the requirements, and my fonts can be used normally in other software.

I adjusted according to the data given by Mr.Vinod, And with the help of the teacher, I made a series of adjustments to make the font very regular, so that the whole picture is very harmonious.

FEEDBACK:
WEEK 8
Independent-learning week

WEEK9
General feedback:In this week's online class, Mr.Max was still very conscientious. Even though the class was delayed by public holidays, he still took time to help us make up for it, and evaluated my homework after class.

Specific feedback:I wrote a lot of fonts, Mr.Max helped me choose four, and I have to choose three more of the four fonts for the next step. I think these fonts are very interesting. After reading the content of the teacher's presentation in class, I am more confident to do this assignment well.
I will talk about making handwriting into electronic version, which is no longer a problem for me. I have absolute confidence to design it well. I have learned from the experience given by the teacher, and I will control the gap between fonts well.

WEEK10
General feedback:In class, Mr.Max showed us a variety of ways to make fonts, which were very practical.

Specific feedback:Mr.Max taught us a method of making fonts with auxiliary lines in class, which I think is a very rigorous and accurate method. This made my fonts very regular and refined, which was very time-consuming, but I thought it was a good way as long as I could do my homework the best. After class, the teacher also helped us choose the best font for the next design.

WEEK11
General feedback: This week's assignment only requires 11 letters and four punctuation marks, but I have already done all 26 letters. The teacher gave me some suggestions, which I found very useful, and I improved them after class.

Specific feedback: Today I talked with Mr.Max about how to improve my homework. The size of my letters is too large and should be reduced. Make the letters and punctuation uniform, and then make the letter thickness uniform, so that the font will look regular.

WEEK12
General feedback
This week's class was cancelled by the public holiday, but on Wednesday, Mr.Max still gave you a make-up class. Thank you very much for Mr.Max. The teacher still answers your questions in a one-to-one manner.

Specific feedback:Today, Mr.Max gave me some suggestions again. For example, there is no problem with my font, but my four punctuation marks still need to be improved. Their spacing and width should be the same, and the width of the period should be consistent with the width of the letter.

WEEK13
General feedback:This week, there was still a problem with the air conditioning in the classroom. We had an online class, in which Mr.Max patiently checked everyone's homework, including poster, font design and blog.
Specific feedback:
The teacher gave me some suggestions. There was no problem with the font, and the spacing and size of the four punctuation marks should be uniform. For the poster, I chose the first black and white poster and gave me some suggestions on regular font.

REFLECTION:
Experience:
As the semester came to an end, time passed quickly and every day was very fulfilling. In one semester's study, I learned a lot of unprecedented knowledge, such as the use of multiple software. The drawing of sketches, the drawing of procreate on tablets are not something you can learn in high school.

Observations:
Font design is more about the observation of fonts and the control of details. Through this assignment, I have a more comprehensive understanding of the art and charm of fonts, and I combine my favorite elements with fonts. Finally, form a font of my own, and then use this font to make a poster that I like. I think this is the meaning of this assignment.

Findings:
I have found that a good font needs to be modified and corrected ten times, hundreds or even thousands of times. If a font is too big or too small, or the lines are not smooth and uniform, it will be out of touch with other fonts, and such fonts are not beautiful, whether it is fonts, in other areas of design, punctuation is also the same. In the end, I would like to thank Mr.Max and Mr.Vinod for their instruction. This semester is coming to an end. It has been a very fulfilling semester.

FURTHER READING:

For this extracurricular reading, I chose a designer's work that is very popular on the Internet. In his work, he explained the structure, layout and planning of fonts in detail to everyone.

He divided the font into four parts, which are ascending line, descending line and high line, and said it very carefully, whether it is a design beginner or a designer can simply understand it. If you can design the font again in the future study. I will definitely use these knowledge points.

These four lines play a very important role in font design. If I can successfully understand all four lines thoroughly, and make clear the baseline and high line, I will be able to make further progress in the future font design study.

In font design, the order of the steps is also very important, if your order is wrong, the beauty of the font will be greatly reduced. For example, the first step must be to draw a sketch, no matter what you do, the importance of the sketch is self-evident. The sketch is the beginning of the actual design process. At this stage, we will take cues from your reference font and make specific creative decisions to set your font apart from others. The purpose of the sketch is to explore the artistic direction.

Font design is not the same as other designs, the quality of the design can be seen at a glance, a good font design can make the readers fresh and fresh when reading the article. The relationship between the quality and quality of fonts includes posters, advertisements, new media, and many industries. I have learned a lot from this extracurricular reading, and learning is the accumulation of a long time. There is no end to learning. In the following holidays, I will also spend a lot of time to learn about font design.
