week 5

The focus of UX research is on the process rather than the aesthetics of the final outcome. When redesigning, it is necessary to clarify who the target users are. An App with a clear audience is more effective than being mass-produced.

The role of UX:

Understand the emotions and experiences of users when they use the product.

Reveal the way users use the system and the problems they encounter.

Explore users' behaviors, goals, motivations and needs.

Ensure that the product design meets the real needs of users.

The job content of UX research:

Formulate clear research methods.

Recruit suitable target users.

Conduct one-on-one interviews.

Use data analysis tools.

Share the research results with the product team.

The steps of UX research:

Clarify the goal

Assumptions and preset judgments

Select the appropriate research method

Carry out research

Sort out and summarize to fill in the information gaps

Common UX files and methods:

Online questionnaire

User Interview

User Profile

Card classification method

User flowchart

User interview skills:

Understand users' attitudes, beliefs and experiences towards the product.

Keep it within 20 minutes.

Observe body and facial expressions beyond language.

Don't force answers. Use open-ended questions.

The design of questions should progress from simple to complex, avoiding guiding users to express negative emotions.

week6

Precautions before data analysis:

Remain neutral and avoid prejudice against certain respondents.

Spread the information evenly and observe the overall trend.

Identify the commonalities and dissimilarities in the information.

The goal of data organization:

Simplify the amount of information to facilitate analysis.

Discover obvious and hidden trends.

Identifying the underlying reasons and putting similar ideas together can lead to new insights.

When is it necessary to tidy up?

The amount of data is too large, difficult to understand or too messy.

Affinity Mapping (Affinity Mapping method)

It is used to identify patterns and themes from a large number of interviews.

Classify and organize the interview content according to thoughts or feelings.

Each user is represented by a different color.

Similar content is pasted together, constantly split or merged, and eventually insights are found.

Mr. Sylvain gives us a exmaple on how to sort and create user persona.

INSTRUCTIONS

After determining the concept and creativity of the App, students will enter the UX design stage and need to complete a comprehensive UX design document to provide a clear direction for the subsequent interface design.

The main tasks include:

Determine and verify the target user group

Based on the research results of the first stage, identify the main audience.

Plan the content structure of the App

Optimize the information architecture by using Card Sorting.

List the functions of the App

Determine the complete list of functions and identify the most basic viable product (MVP).

Draw the Wireframes of the main interface

Preliminary visualization of the interface layout and functional arrangement.

Design User Flow Chart

Plan the operation paths and interaction methods for users in the App.

Summary:

I interviewed five people, two from China, one from the UK, one from Brazil and the last one from Japan. Each person was asked 12 questions and I asked them to rate this software with a full score of 10. Basically, they gave it a score of 6 or 7.

All five people have been to Universal Studios and have used Universal Studios software. Summarizing that the main issues are mainly focused on software interaction and display.

Everyone mentioned that the map navigation is unclear, the information interface is messy, and there is a lack of intelligent navigation. Secondly, there are software lag and language system problems. Finally, someone mentioned that the animation is not smooth.

This is a new set of interviews I have added. The interviewees are a family with parents and children. They are also die-hard fans and tourists of Universal Studios.

Interviewer 6
Name: Han Jianhong and Wang shuai(The family of HanJianhong)
Age: 35
Occupation: Junior high school teacher
Family: Husband (37 years old) + Son (8 years old)
Visit Time: The Spring Festival holiday in 2024

Mr. Sylvain told me that it was done quickly and well, but there was no need to do all the interfaces. I could choose just a few key ones to work on.

Making each interface separately would be too complicated. I can put the ticket purchase interface on the main page because it is very important. Then some hotel booking interfaces can be placed behind it. Usually, after purchasing the tickets, people will book hotels. Secondly, the map can incorporate those prominent markers into the map. Highlight the interface that the user is currently viewing, so that the user can know which interface they are on.

FEEDBACK

WEEK5

After communicating with Mr.Sylvain in class this week, he told me that I couldn't interview three types of interviewees. Finally, I chose to interview young people, and I needed to list some more open-ended questions to facilitate the subsequent work.

WEEK6

In this week's class, Mr.Sylvain told us how to combine the sticky notes from last week's Figma to create character images, which played a significant role in our analysis of users.

After communicating with Mr.Sylvain after class, Mr.Sylvain told me that I could join a new group of interviewees. It could be a family parent with a child to see how they would answer the same questions when interviewed, because Universal Studios also has a lot of this kind of tourists. I think it makes a lot of sense. I will complete the interview, organization and task panel production work this week. Mr.Sylvain also told me that if I had any questions, I could ask him via Whatsapp at any time. He is a helpful and patient teacher and I respect him very much.

WEEK7

This week, I delved deeper into the work based on last week's interviews. I categorized each person I interviewed and created three journey maps, incorporating their emotional ups and downs at the time. The teacher said there were no issues and asked which journey map was my favorite. I chose the second one, which was about the Chinese male interviewee, Yule.

WEEK8

Based on last week's journey map, this week I started to create the user flow chart and choosing MVP features. I first made the choosing MVP features. I think the most important part is the four main functions. Mr. Sylvain suggested that I should understand Yule's usage process. I decided to interview him again.

WEEK9

After interviewing Yule again, I updated the interview content and the process of his using the Universal Studios app at that time. I added the part where he was looking for shows and marking the locations of the shows, which is very important. Mr. Salvain thought that I could change the flowchart from vertical to horizontal, which would be more convenient to view.

REFLECTION

Mr. Sylvain is a very meticulous and responsible teacher. Every time I report to him, I feel great. He speaks slowly and takes good care of us non-native speakers. I think he is the best teacher in the entire school. During his classes, reporting to him makes me feel very comfortable. Every time I speak, Mr. Sylvain always nods in response, which makes me feel very warm.

The entire semester's learning process was very interesting. Mr. Sylvain would give one-on-one reports to everyone in each class. During the reports, I always learned a lot. He would tell me what to do next and he would never deny your viewpoints. He often proposed some new ideas, allowing my thoughts to be more divergent and less restricted. I am very grateful to Mr. Sylvain.

The application design course is a very challenging one. We need to go through several steps: first, create a plan, then present it in a speech, then conduct user research, interview users, draw flowcharts, and finally develop the app. Each step is crucial. We must complete each step well in order to complete the final assignment successfully. I think I was very serious about every interview and every chart. I usually exceeded the task requirements. Finally, I would like to thank Mr. Sylvain for his care and support during my learning journey, which has provided me with great help.
